There are some very subtle clues throughout the story (such as a rainbow coloured cake, the tentative holding of hands, the mirroring of the patterns on their clothing and the sharing of some lovely, personal poems) that suggested to me that Emmett and Caleb are very much in love. {The Reading Realm}

This has quickly become one of my favourite picture books. A subtle, beautiful exploration of friendship that opens doors to other feeling and complex emotions. The two main characters are beautifully different, yet they compliment each other in a perfect literary relationship.
This is a perfect book for a cold winter night when you need your heart warming up. Best read with a hot choc (and marshmallows).
My 5 year old requests "Emmett and Caleb" daily, which I'm very happy about.
To me, the phrase, 'Love is patient; love is kind' is personified in this book. The way Emmett and Caleb show love is both subtle (in their every day lives) and more overt (for example, in their poems) - a fresh balance for children's books which can sometimes be very unsubtle in the way they want children to 'see' friendship.
Emmett and Caleb's friendship is shown over the course of a year and there are many acts of kindness and selflessness. There are also the differences between them, and the times when they don't always see eye to eye which is really powerful when talking to children about the nature of relationships even with those we love or our closest friends/family. This is a beautiful book to treasure for all ages and I believe every time you come back to it, you will see something new and think about Emmett and Caleb in a different way.
A gorgeous book about the beauty and happiness found in day-to-day life. It is gentle, unruffled, and explores how to treat the people and places you love with tenderness and respect. My three-year-old likes it when she wants to be calm, and it has been known to send grandparents off to sleep as well.
